Family History

HACKETT FAMILY HISTORY. The family history of the Hackett's starts in 1826 with the arrival in Sydney of JAMES HACKETT, a convict, transported to Australia for horse stealing. James was born in Froome, Somerset in England on 5/4/1807. He was from Protestant parents, JAMES HACKETT (Snr) and ELIZABETH HACKETT (Nee Masters). He could not read or write and when convicted of horse stealing in Wales, he was placed on trial at Grecon on the 27/3/1826 at the age of 19 years. As James had no previous convictions, his sentence was "transportation to the Australian Colonies for the remainder of his natural life". The transport ship "Speke 2" that bought James and his fellow convicts to Australia was 36 years old and left from Sheerness, England on the 8th August, 1826 and sailed for 110 days to arrive in Sydney on the 26th November, 1826. Ship's records state that James was 5 feet in height, single, had a fair to florid completion with light hair and hazel eyes. He had a scar over the end of the left eyebrow, and at the time of his conviction was working as a groom. The 1828 census places James working for Sir John Jamison of "Regent Villa", as a jockey, trainer, coachman and butler. This residence was destroyed by fire on 22/5/1869. James was granted a ticket of leave on 6/7/1835 to remain in the Evan (Penrith) district, but this was cancelled on 29/3/1836 after he committed an unknown felony, He received another ticket of leave for the same district on 7/7/1836. James married Mary Ann Bradley by bans on 21/8/1838 at Castlereagh. Mary Ann was the grand-daughter of two first-fleeters, Anthony Rope & Elizabeth Rope (Nee Pulley). James was again given a ticket of leave passport on 31/11/1839 which allowed him to attend the "Sydney Markets and visit the Bathurst district for 24 months" on behalf of Sir John Jamison, where he established one of the first stations on the Namoi. James received his Conditional Pardon on 1/7/1842 and not long after, left Sir John Jamison's employ. He opened a butcher's shop on the corner of Riley Street and the Highway at Penrith until 1844 when he moved to St Marys with his wife and children, James (3) and Elizabeth (1) - James (Jnr 1) had died in 1839 aged 1 year. At St Marys, he rented from Sir Maurice O'Connell, a site on the corner of Princess Street and the Highway and started a butchery business, but after 12 months was forced out by drought which depleted his stock. He again returned to Penrith with his family to establish a butcher shop on the banks of Peach Tree Creek. He remained there for four years but left over a dispute with his landlady, Mrs McHenry over the refusal by her to mend a fence. The bad fences caused James trouble as his sheep were always straying from the paddock through broken fences. He returned again to St Marys and purchased a block of land on the banks of South Creek and built his family home "The Woolpack Inn" which he used partly as a residence and partly as a butchery. When the trades were in a recession due to the discovery of gold, he went to try his luck on the Turon gold fields. He returned to St Marys empty-handed but was astute enough to see that business was booming supplying to the trade along the Great Western Highway making their way to the gold fields. In 1853 he built onto the family home and opened a public house, as well as the butcher shop, and with his friend, Thomas Shadlow as surety on the license from 1853 - 1855 his profits grew and he invested in land around the town. In 1856, some of Sir Maurice O'Connell's estate, including the reserve of "Victoria Square" came into the possession of Andrew Hardy McCullock from Sydney who subdivided the holdings into town and agricultural blocks, which allowed the village of St Marys to expand beyond the highway. On 17/6/1872, McCullock chose to ignore the Reserves' public ownership and sold it to James Hackett for 100 pounds, its area then being at little more than half its present acre. The townspeople contested the ownership in court and won their case, and James was reimbursed the purchase price (with no hard feelings), plus a few unsold blocks on Quarry Hill as compensation.

This photo is believed to be the original James Hackett. He was described as being only around 5 feet tall. (Original photo in the possession of William Hackett)

BENNETT FAMILY - Nepean Times - 22/8/1896 - "Off to Coolgardie" - This is not, as many would think, an announcement of someone going to the Golden West, but simply to let the public know where the work that is done in the district goes to. Mr. G T Bennett had an order from a large contracting firm at Coolgardie to supply a set of wagon wheels and axles extra strong. These are finished and seem capable of going anywhere. He generally receives an order for something for the same firm nearly every month. Mr. Bennett at the present time has the largest stock of any wheelwright shop in the colony which is saying a good deal. Nepean Times - 19/1/1918 - A wagon of unusual dimensions has almost been completed by G T Bennett Ltd - an order for Mr. Stanford of Qld, a carrier. The body is 23' long x 9' and 7' high, the back wheels and tyres are 7" wide and over 6' high. The wagon which is the long top type with the body jutting out more than a foot over the wheels, will be painted on either side "There are none like me ". Spotted gum, ironbark and bluegum woods were used in the construction. Business in the wagon building trade is, we are informed, quite to a certain extent owing to the heavy cost of materials, but both firms in St Marys are keeping their ends up. Nepean Times - 28/1/1920 -(Good Townsman Leaving} - St Marys is about to lose one of its most useful and highly respected townsman in the person of Mr. G T Bennett (Snr). It is not an extravagant eulogy to say that this gentleman is one of those whom the town can least afford to lose. He is about to take up residence in the metropolis, in fact, he is now making arrangements to that end. The approaching Old Buffers reunion will mark the close of his term as a St Marys resident, and will afford his numerous friends an opportunity of bidding him farewell. He has been a resident of St Marys for over 60 years - a long innings, in fact, the best that this old buffer has played and that is saying a great deal. Mr. & Mrs Bennett will carry good wishes with them of many appreciative townsfolk. Mr. & Mrs George Bennett (Jnr) are also leaving the district to take up residence at Petersham. Their many friends will be pleased to learn of their prosperity down there.

After 15 years service, he obtained his discharge with many badges for good conduct ( he also won the distinctive silver medal) and a service pension. He married soon after leaving the service to Caroline Page who was the sister of John Page who started the "Saylhurst Tannery" at St Marys, NSW. Caroline was living with her brother John at St Marys before leaving for New Zealand. John gave Joseph an offer of work in Australia and they both came back to Australia on the 8th March, 1861 to commence work at the tannery where Joseph remained until March, 1878. Their daughter Ada Constance was the wife of the St Marys Poundkeeper & Auctioneer, Frederick Harvey, who died in the de-licensed "Commercial Hotel" when it was a private residence in 1918. William and Elizabeth lived at "Rayhill" at Bringelly and according to the 1828 cencus they had 200 acres, 60 cleared and 12 under cultivation they had 2 horses and 150 cattle, this land was a grant from Governor Macquarie. Their son, William James is buried in the St Mary Magdalene churchyard at St Marys, NSW

DESBOROUGH - Robert Desborough came from England to Sydney in 1882 on the ship "Lorri Doon" . He was a currier by trade and came to work in the tannery of John Hereford. He later purchased some land at "Bull's Bush" at St Marys NSW and asked permission of the St Marys Council to erect his tannery on his property "Southborough" on 2/2/1891 . He established his tannery (a one-man operation) which he conducted for 60 years. When he was established, he wrote to his brothers in England to come out to Australia to join him. He never married and was known for his excellent harness leather, which was much sought after by harness makers. It was Robert's custom to do business at Penrith NSW on their market day (Thursday), and being a lover of beer, was always over indulging, resulting in his horse bringing him home. It was on such a winters evening that Robert, after stalling his horse, accidentally fell into one of his tanning pits which contained about a foot of water, and he was found the next morning frozen to death. He is buried in an unmarked grave.

DOLLIN - Thomas & Mary Ann Dollin sailed from England to Australia with son Henry Isaac on the "Herefordshire" in 1857 - after missing the ill-fated "Dunbar" which was wrecked at Sydney NSW on 27th May, 1857. They settled at Clarence Town, New England before coming to St Marys. Mary Ann was the local midwife. Thomas was a bricklayer and stonemason and built many of the buildings in the district. Their sons Henry Thomas and Albert George were tanners at St Marys and a grandchild, Jack Hunter Dollin worked for the Bennett Wagon Works.

He came to Sydney & took up tanning at Burwood NSW, then came to St Marys NSW in September, 1882 - where he took over the "Saylhurst Park" tannery to rename it the "Colonial Tannery" . He started the 8 hour day working system and was regarded as the working man's champion. He had the largest tannery in St Marys in 1894 when he died at the age of 88. Shortly after the tannery was closed and many workers & their families had to leave the district. The tannery remained closed until 1897 when it was restarted by William Armstrong who operated it for 3 years.

PRITCHARD - Mary Maskey (Nee Pritchard) was tried at Monmouth Assizes for stealing food & clothing from a local store in Llanstrisant (near Shepstow) in Wales and was transported for 7 years on 11/3/1803 on "HMS Glatton" and was assigned to a french convict Ferdinand Meaurant who was sent here in 1800 for robbing a bank in Ireland. Andrew was a tanner and farmer in Ireland and six of his sons grew up to be tanners and farmers like their father. The only son to come to Australia was Samuel Thompson- born in Monacana, Tyrone, Ireland on the 12th August, 1827. In the 1840's Samuel came to Australia on the "St Vincent" to settle on the west bank of South Creek, at St Marys, NSW where he saw the potential for tanning in that area. His parents and the rest of his brothers emigrated to America in 1857 to St Paul in Minnesota. By 1850 he had established a small tannery on the eastern side of South Creek with a yard containing 6 pits. In 1851 he married the niece of James Byrnes at her uncle's hotel " The Commercial" at St Marys. Isabella was the daughter of Andrew Robinson and Nancy Robinson (Nee Leslie). She joined him in the operation of the tannery and their finished product was taken by horse and cart to Parramatta, returning with household supplies and raw hides.
